Richard Manuel, a generous patron and longtime member of the Board of Directors of the Cleveland International Piano Competition, passed away on January 5, 2014.
Mr. Manuel began his involvement with the Competition in its early days, when it was known as the Robert Casadesus Piano Competition, beginning an association that lasted more than 30 years. He became a founding board member of the organization when it was renamed the Cleveland International Piano Competition in 1994, and served as a member of the Board of Directors since that time, most recently serving on the Advisory Board.

With his wife Connie, Mr. Manuel helped to establish the Competition’s endowment fund, sponsored the Competition’s Third Prize, and provided major support for the Competition’s Second Prize. He had a great love of piano music and was himself an accomplished amateur pianist.
In recognition of their generosity and friendship, Mr. and Mrs. Manual were named founding members of the Martha Joseph Society, which honors individuals who have had a significant and long-term impact on the stability and growth of the Competition. The Manuels were also elected Honorary Directors of the Competition, in recognition of their distinctive and lasting commitment to the organization.
We are grateful for Mr. Manuel’s loyalty and friendship, his generous spirit and his love for classical music.
